So I’m going to keep it short this week. On Saturday, I did my first weekly live stream on the Dan Mumm (Official) Facebook page. For the subject of the live stream, I taught one of my favorite tricks for improvising on the guitar.
The live stream is almost an hour long, but the lesson is shorter and can be found at the beginning. After the lesson, I stuck around to answer questions from the audience. It was a lot of fun! If you don’t have a lot of time, you can just watch the lesson part and follow along with the tabs that I will link to in this article.

This is a trick originally developed for Gypsy Jazz but it can be used for any style of music for improvising, writing solos, melodies and anything else you can think of. It allows you to “get away” with playing just about any note you want as long as you return to the notes of the arpeggio.
As we talked about in some of the previous articles, scales can be quite limiting after awhile. If you’d like to one day be able to play purely by ear without having to worry about scales anymore, this is a huge step in that direction.
In the meantime, you can just use this trick as I teach it or adapt it in new and unique ways to your own tastes.
